Bruce Wampold

Improving psychotherapy outcome – one therapist at a time

Educational Objectives:

  1. To be knowledgeable about the research evidence related to the effectiveness of psychotherapy.
  2. To be able to identify the skills that characterize effective therapists
  3. To learn how expert therapists, improve their outcomes
  4. To use deliberate practice to improve therapeutic skills

In psychotherapy there is often a debate between those who claim the specific ingredients of various treatments are responsible for the benefits of psychotherapy and those who content that the common factors are critical.  This debate ignores evidence that specific ingredients and common factors work together to make psychotherapy effective.  In this workshop a model, called the Contextual Model, that integrates specific ingredients and common factors is presented.  The research evidence for the model will be discussed and clinical examples will be used to illustrate how the Contextual Model can be used to improve psychotherapy outcomes.
